Everyone Could Use a Little Backup

I’m beginning to see a trend.

You know, the go with the flow or let’s wait and see what happens, trend.

As a parent, we know that this way of life often inflicts more stress than necessary and causes more harm than good. On the other hand, many parents have financial plans, spending plans, insurance plans and even career plans but no one seems to take into consideration that a solid child care plan is vital to the well-being of the family, especially when there are two working parents in the household.

Today, let’s explore what a good backup plan looks like and how it can possibly preserve your sanity.

Begin By Making a Plan Your strategy here really depends on the age of your children. If you have children under the age of five then, this plan needs to be reviewed often. Have you thought about what happens if your child runs a fever the night before, during a weekday? That means, they cannot go to school the next day. There is a 24hour waiting period for most schools, following a fever.

Or, what happens if the school calls to say that your child is sick and needs to be picked up right before you’re about to head into a very important presentation?

Lastly, have you considered the route you will take if your nanny calls in sick or has a sick child themselves? Begin to make a plan using these different scenerios. Even if you don’t have a solution just yet, at least you’ve taken the time to think on these things.

Implement the Plan Now that you’ve thought about most or all of the issues that could arise that would throw you off of your game, take the time to fill in the blanks. Who will you call if you’re running late to pick up your child from school? Who’s the emergency contact for your family? Do they know what to do as your emergency contact? Have you talked to your nanny about how to handle if she’s needs to call in sick or is having her own issues at home? Who’s going to back you up? Implementing your plan can be as easy as using your smartphone to log the contacts you’ll use or having a simple conversation with your boss about if you ever need to abrubtly leave the office to tend to your child. Keep the implementation simple and it will work for you.

Review Your Plan Just like there are fire drills and earthquake preparedness drills, you need to test your backup plan periodically. Set a date every six to eight weeks to review your plan. Did your emergency mom take a new job and is not as available? Perhaps you have a new nanny or you have enrolled your child into an afterschool program. Do they know how to support you in case of an emergency when your child gets sick or you’re running late to pick up?

I know this may seem somewhat extreme but preparation is the key to life and boy has this been my life lesson. Situations arise almost daily that show me the truth in this.

It’s always a good idea to make sure that your plan actually works and honestly, the only way to truly know, is to actually try it. Put your plan to the test.
