Permission to Take Good Care of Yourself

From day one, I have been an advocate for moms putting their best selves forward. In fact, moms being their best is one of the many reasons that I created The Nanny Factory. Having child care on hand allows the freedom of expression and the pressure relief that some moms and dads need to recharge and remember, who they really are.

While I realize that there are single dads out there holding it down for the littles, I want to focus on the moms in this post. If you’re a dad reading this, just know that I’m subliminally talking to you, too. Just substitute the word, “mom” for “dad.”

I speak at a lot of moms’ groups and I am sad to report that I’ve witnessed far too many moms that have gotten caught up in the whole sacrifical mom idea. Meaning, putting themselves last and coming out in public in frumpy, stretch pants, even pajama pants, all because they believe that as a mom, there simply is no time for beauty, fitness and looking hot.

ATTENTION MOMS! Do not fall for this!

As a mom, it is your duty to look your best. You are now representing an extension of yourself, which is your child(ren). If you’re married or have a significant other, you definitely want to give them something good to talk about. Perhaps how you haven’t skipped a beat since becoming the mom of one, two, three or four.

Before I go on, let me take a moment to express my complete gratitude and appreciation for the few moms, who have managed to take good care of themselves. I see you at the gym, at the mall, at my networking meetings and have even met with some of you regarding hiring a nanny. Thank you for your commitment to inspire us all. The future belongs to you.

I know what you might be saying, “Great! That sounds good and all but I’m too busy, what mom has the time to put on makeup?”

I’m glad you asked. I’ve got the top three ways to make sure that you take good care of yourself:

  1. Take a NO EXCUSES approach to taking good care of yourself. It starts with a decision!

  2. Remember who you used to be before you became a mom. Are you a runner? Did you get pedicures every month before becoming a mom? Do you enjoy spending time at the bookstore or taking a cooking class? Remember, make plans and do it!

  3. Plan your life around taking good care of yourself. That means, if there is a cardio class that you like to take every Tuesday at 6, put it on the calendar and plan your life around it. It’s your Holy Grail. Don’t let anything come between you and that cardio class. It’s that important.

You see, there really are no excuses to not living the life that you want or looking and feeling your best. It’s really up to you. Your family also wants you to look and feel your best, not the other way around.

As the mom of three girls and one boy, I lead them by example. My girls witness me stopping by the makeup counter at the mall to get my favorite shade of lipstick or that lash extension mascara. They come with me to the shoe department to try on and strut around in my favorite pair of pumps. They even trek along to my 5:15 pm Step and Sculpt class each week. I’m showing them, firsthand, that the way I look and feel is important to me. I don’t compromise and I want them to do the same when they get older.

So go ahead, you’ve got the greenlight. What’s the one thing that you would like to do, on a consistent basis that helps you feel good? Share in the comments below and make a plan to start back before the next blog post is published. Deal?!?
